What is the Great Awakening?

BASIC CONCEPTS OF THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING

What was the Great Awakening?

The Great Awakening was a spiritual renewal that swept the American Colonies, particularly New England, during the first half of the 18th Century. Certain Christians began to disassociate themselves with the established approach to worship at the time which had led to a general sense of complacency among believers, and instead they began to seek spiritual revival. This new spiritual renewal began with people like the Wesley brothers and George Whitefield in England and crossed over to the American Colonies during the first half of the 18th Century.

What caused the Great Awakening?

In late 17th Century England, fighting between religious and political groups came to a halt with the Glorious Revolution of 1688, an event which established the Church of England as the reigning church of the country. Other religions, such as Catholicism, Judaism, and Puritanism, were subsequently suppressed. From a political perspective, this led to stability since everyone now practiced the same religion. But instead of being a positive driving force for religious belief in general, it created complacency and spiritual “dryness” among believers. Religion became something of a pastime in which people would “go through the motions” during religious services without deeply-felt convictions of the heart and soul. It was only after some decades of this kind of complacency in both England and the American colonies that the spiritual “revival” of the Great Awakening came about. (Does any of this sound familiar with our day and time?)

Its time for another Great Awakening!

Many of us believe that it is time for another Great Awakening!

The Holy Spirit has acted before and the Holy Spirit continues to be active and very present in this world. Jesus promised his followers that they would do "Greater things than this" through the power of the Holy Spirit.  ~ John 14: 12-14

What can I do?

Each of us has a role to play in ushering in the power of the Holy Spirit for the next Great Awakening. Retired pastors, rise up! Students, this is your time! Church leaders, usher in the presence of God! Lay leaders pray in the watch towers! All of us have a role!

It starts with prayer.

Can you commit to daily prayer and educating yourself about the historical past, which will influence our future? Need more info about prayer? Pete Grieg teaches about 24/7 prayer and how prayer continues to bring revival to the neighborhoods.

One of my favorites ibooks on past revivals is "Fire on the Altar." These books describes the Great Awakenings from the reformation forward. These are documented times in history when God has acted in supernatural ways to change the course of history. Each revival/renewal/awakening  came about as the result of fervent prayer.
